01. I'm home [Text]

Hello everyone. For those of you who may not know me, my name is Chiyo and I'm a Vaporeon. I first arrived at Smash Academy two years back and spent, according to the time here, a year away on an unexpected break. If by chance you may be curious as to where I've been, I was away traveling through a few worlds before I was able to find a portal to return here. Speaking of which, portals can be rather complicated to understand and use, so please be careful when you see or plan to use one, okay?

That aside, I'll be in college this year! I'm greatly looking forward to studying, spending time in the library and greenhouse, swimming, and hanging out with friends again. Although I'm saddened to have discovered that several friends I knew have left, I still look forward to making new friends and hope we'll have a pleasant year together.

In the meantime, I'll be taking a walk around the school and will be looking to reunite with some friends. If you'd like to meet or text me, please feel free to do so. I'll have my phone with me and will answer any texts as soon as I'm able.

Again, it's nice to be back. I hope I didn't cause too much trouble when I disappeared. If I did, I'd like to make it up to you. Other than that, hope you have a great day!

"I... never knew." It brought her some relief to see Jon wasn't about to scold her or make any displays of disappointment in her. His response also helped clear up a lot of confusion she had over the years. It explained a whole lot.

Except for one thing. Or person, to be specific.

"And... Seth?" She didn't want to think the worst of him, but he did provide her with the candy. Even went along with her idea that it was magical. How ridiculous she felt at her own ignorance.

"He was the one who gave me the candy, but...." She couldn't express her doubt. It wasn't something she normally said of others. After the incident with robots and shadow clones, things were a little hazy and she never knew what happened to him. Was he a part of the whole scheme? Why would he have given her something so dangerous?

"I don't understand."

"He died. Injected himself with shadow bugs on top of a building and became some strange overmuscled half Pokémon half Man creature. He and Eggman fought and he wound up exploding... I am... unsure of how it went exactly. All information I have on it is second hand as I was a robot for some of that time and unconscious in a crater for the rest of it."

It hadn't been a great day.

"I believe, however, that he has come back as a ghost type Pokémon. If you've unfinished business with him, you may be able to finish it after all."

He looked worried as he said that. He certainly wouldn't try to inhibit her doing things she felt she needed to do. That didn't mean he wouldn't worry.

"D-Died?" The gruesome details of his death were shocking. And to add, he came back as a ghost type Pokemon? It was almost unbelievable.

"I-I'm okay. I'd... rather not approach him. I just wanted to know the truth." In fact, she felt rather terrified of him now that she knew everything.

"Fair enough. I'm just letting you know you've the option, should you feel you need to." Jon reassured her.

Still. He felt reassured that she had no intention of going near the ghost type.

"You know, Chiyo, if ever you're having problems, you've only ever to come find me. Even if it's just a friendly ear you're in need of. This place is wonderful but it's also strange at times and it can be dangerous. Independence is important but I'd not want you to feel you're alone here."

"Yeah..." She gave him a small smile. "Thank you, Jon. Talking to you has helped me a lot. I feel much better now having gotten all that off my chest, and to have learned everything. And... the same goes for you, too. I'd always gladly lend you an ear when you need it. Anytime."

Then, she brought up her hands to stifle a yawn and rub her eyes.

Jon drained the last of the tea from his cup.

"Yawning, eh? You know, chamomile tea will do that to you. Though, I expect the rigors of re-settling yourself also have a part to play, eh?"

He stood up and picked up his tray.

"Here. Let me walk you back to your dorm so you can get some rest?"

Chiyo followed suit and picked up her dishes to put away. It wasn't until she yawned that she realized she had gotten so tired.

"Thanks," she murmured as she moved slowly beside him. "As much as I love the snow, I hope Spring comes soon. It'd be nice to lay down in the grass again by the lake. Taking a nap out in the sun as a Vaporeon.... I kind of miss it.

Maybe the next time we go out for a walk, you could tell me all about your stories and adventures?"

"Oh, certainly." Jon replied, walking his tray to the depository and taking care of it before turning to take hers and do the same.

"Mine might not be so interesting as yours, but I'll gladly share. I think Spring may not be far off. I've noted a change in the breeze. It's been warmer lately. Your wish may not be too far from coming true."

"It has gotten warmer, hasn't it?" She smiled, thinking of the warm sun, chirping of birds, and glimmering dew all around. Heading toward her room, she sauntered alongside her dear friend. "You know what I also miss? Running on all fours."

"Well then, let's make a plan to do that together at the earliest opportunity. I enjoy a good run about on all fours myself." Jon replied, smiling again. "Once you're rested and settled in again, of course."

"Then, perhaps while we still have a bit of snow! And when winter breaks. And, and maybe just... kind of all the time. ...If that's okay." She giggled softly. Her excitement was building at the lineup of all the activities they had planned to do. If she wasn't so tired, she would have loved to go outside now and enjoy a run.

"We could even go tomorrow since I'm sure I'll be rested well enough then!"

"Then tomorrow it is." he replied warmly.

He held the door for her to leave the cafeteria and looked outside. Hopefully tomorrow would be as nice as today. He was looking forward to spending time with her like they used to. Though, actually....

"Chiyo? I've... ah. I've a proposition for you. I wanted to ask you about it last time you were here and I didn't get to it in time. I'd not like to make the same mistake again if at all possible... so. Would you mind terribly if I asked you a question?"

His request sounded serious. Curious, she smiled up warmly at Jon to let him know it was perfectly alright for him to ask anything of her.

"Of course I wouldn't mind, Jon. What is it you would like to ask?"

This was the first time he'd had to consider exactly HOW he was going to ask this of her, despite having thought about it quite seriously before now.

"....well. As you know, I'm a trainer." he replied. "I started at something of a disadvantage, being as I wasn't born in a place that has Pokémon. Riwane sort of adopted me as her trainer and I've worked hard to catch up on everything I'd missed out on by being born in England as opposed to, say, Kanto or Unova."

He turned to look at her and placed a hand gently on her shoulder.

"My point is, I've worked fairly hard to try and become a worthy trainer. And I know my work isn't yet done and I've a great deal left to learn. However, I'd very much like it if... well. If you'd like me to, I'd very much like to be Your trainer."

There! Out in the open! His heart was racing a mile a minute - he was quite anxious she'd say no. But he had to ask. He'd kicked himself over not asking her about it last time she was here.

"Of course, if you'd sooner not, then that's fine! No hard feelings, of course. I just wanted... well. I've wanted to make you an offer like that for some time. As I've said, you're a dear friend to me and even if you say No, I'd not want that to change."

She listened calmly, nodding and humming all the while to encourage him to go on.

Riwane. She hoped she'd get to befriend and know better. England. Wow. She'd have to ask him about that sometime. Jon as her trainer.

Whoa. A few minutes for the words to sink in. Whooooa!

"M-Me? Jon. Me? Are you sure? Me?" Wide eyed, mouth agape, and fully shocked, Chiyo couldn't believe her ears. Never expected such an invitation. In fact, she felt really honored to have been asked. She hadn't had a trainer in years and never gave it much thought to have a new one since she learned how to turn into a human.

And... and Jon had been wanting to ask since she was last here? Really? Her heart followed suit in racing a mile a minute too. She just couldn't wrap her mind around it. What was so special about her to make a great individual and new trainer like Jon want her?

"B-But, why me? I mean, I'm... I'm not exactly the strongest out there. I mean. It's not that I'm opposed either. But... I'm just really shocked."

"Yes, you." Jon replied, smiling a little bit. She was always so humble.

"First of all, strength isn't everything. To me, Pokémon training is about companionship, teamwork and trust first. Strength is something I am sure you have in greater measure than you realize. I'd like to help you find it and nurture it."

His smile softened. Out of almost every person he'd ever met, she seemed most able to draw out whatever gentleness his soul possessed. She had a calming effect on him and always had. Maybe it was her ties to water? That was a soothing element, wasn't it?

"We'd work on that together, at your pace. You said that you want to gain confidence and self assurance. I think... I think that I can help you. I'd love the opportunity to try. A Pokémon team and their trainer are like family. I've seen that here. I think that between the two of us, we'd make an outstanding team."

He had a beautiful philosophy. The kind of philosophy she could hope for in a trainer. Her heart swelled and she couldn't hope to hold back her tears.

She couldn't believe it. A new trainer. And it would be her best friend to boot.

"If. If you're really okay, then yes. Yes, I'd love to be your Pokemon!" She laugh, cried, and smiled all at the same time.

A new family....

"I'll... I'll work my hardest. I promise. I'll make you proud."

"Then it's official."

He was happy, of course. Ecstatic. But he'd be lying if he said he wasn't at least a little nervous, too - he wanted to be the trainer she deserved, after all. But he was determined to set high standards for both of them.

He wrapped an arm over her shoulders and drew her in a little closer, feeling as though the moment deserved a hug. It wasn't every day, after all, that your family grew by a member. Especially not by a member as special as Chiyo.

"I know you'll make me proud. And I'll work hard every single day to make you just as proud of me. Together, we're going to be great. You've my word."

She didn't hold herself back and went in for a big ~~bone-crushing~~ hug. Jon was always someone she admired. If they were a pack, he'd be the alpha male she'd look up to and trust completely. She was absolutely elated to have him as the head of her family.

"I'm always proud of you, Jon," she said. "I can't wait to work with you. Fight for you. And with you."

"Just be aware, I'll always do my utmost to work as hard as you do." Jon replied, leaning into that rib-shattering hug. "We're a team. That can never be a one-sided endeavor."

In his travels in Kanto and Johto, he had seen trainers who treated their Pokémon like tools. He had no words for how that made him feel, but it was not something he'd ever seek to emulate.

"Come on, then. Let's carry on with getting you to your dorm for some rest, eh?" he said, pulling back just a little bit. "We can figure out any other details tomorrow once you've had a full night's sleep and some time to unwind."

He, personally, was going to send Riwane an e-mail. (Once he figured out how to do that.) She was probably going to be as excited and happy as he was, if not even more so. She'd often lamented not having team mates. Now, she'd gotten her wish granted in a wonderful way.

The amount of joy she felt each time he mentioned they were a team was endless. She almost felt disappointed to have to go take a rest. She didn't think she'd be able to sleep. But she'd try. For Jon's sake.

"Thank you again, Jon. For choosing me," she said before heading towards her door and, with reluctance, bid her brand new trainer a good day before entering her room.

"You're welcome, Chiyo. Thank you for accepting."

He bid her a good rest and walked back to his own room.

Anyone who knew him well might have been surprised to see how wide he was grinning as he made his way down the halls towards the teacher's dorms.
