Force and Action

[He'd seen the news broadcast, and absolutely no part of it boded well. Smash Academy was officially a target to anyone with strong pro-human sentiments. He wasn't as quick to put on his military cap as Cyrus, but he could read the writing on the wall.]

A notice to students; over the next few days, if anyone from Final Destination City tries to talk to you about the incident or makes any sort of threat towards you or your friends, get in touch with a member of the faculty as soon as you can. It doesn't matter who; if nothing else you can reply to this message, or visit someone's office hours. Do not try to solve any problems by yourself. Remember that we're here to help you and keep your safe.

I know I'm part of a long line of people you're explaining to today, but... what the hell actually happened out there?

Do you guys need an extra man on security for a while? [The way he says that implies a YET at the end.]

I heard on the news that they're associating Aperture with the incident. Are you all right?

[She remains quiet for a few moments before she speaks up again. This man sounds very wise, very sagely. Eirika respects that.

She considers saying something more regarding where responsibility sits, but feels it's not so important and instead, focuses on his own position.]

Oh, you are an... [The princess pauses as she tries to think on how she'd say it.] A tutor? An instructor. Professor. ...Scholar? I am not sure how they'd call you. It's admirable that you're keeping such a close watch over the students.

A scientist, by training. A professor by station. And a few other things on top of that... What about you? Are you a student here? I don't think I've seen you in my physics class...

A...

[He's a what by training?]

I'm a... [She probably should have introduced herself to begin with.] Eirika, Princess of Renais. It would appear I am placed into the role of a pupil. [She just hasn't placed herself in classes yet. She should probably get on that.]

Another uninformed inquiry for you, Professor. What is a scientist?

[A... princess? SERIOUSLY? Okay, her statement said something about her world. Probably one of those magic-thick branes with a topsy-turvy symmetry that allows for it.]

I... guess a Scholar is the closest thing to it, as we study the world around us using a rigid set of rules that all scientists agree to. Some study biology--life. Others chemistry--alchemy, I guess. I'm a physicist. I answer questions like why the sky is blue and why gravity keeps our heads out of the clouds.

[It is officially the worst thing for her to be informed of sciences. Alchemy is a bit of a closer term for her, but still unnatural and foreign. But then, magic itself is a foreign ideal. At least she knows what that is, though.]

A physi... cist. [She says it slowly to better understand it.] You seem to know a good number of things people merely take for granted. In my homeland, I think someone would say the sky is blue for that is how the gods made it, and I know nothing of this... 'gravity' or anything like it. I have found in you a foreign language, it'd seem.

[Ohhhhh princess, he could go on for HOURS. But he knows this isn't the time for that.]

[...Oh, what the hell.]

It's what causes a ball to fall back down to the ground after you toss it into the air. Have you ever wondered why it does that? What mechanism is behind it?

[Even in times of darkness, people can use a bit of a guiding light. Eirika doesn't seem to mind. If anything, talking with him puts her a bit at ease.]

I've admittedly not given it much thought until you said something of it. My grooming has left me little time to contemplate such things of the world. Do you discuss things of this nature in your class?

That I do, Princess. For instance, the reason the sky is blue is because the air that stretches miles--err, furlongs above us acts like a kind of thin prism. The colors in the white light of the sun are scattered at certain angles as it shines down. That's why the sky is blue at midday, and red at sunset. What you're really seeing are different parts of... well, the biggest rainbow in the world, I guess you could say.

[... Eirika blinks.]

That's a very beautiful way to say it. I had no idea this... science of yours could be used to define the world and its wonders in such a fashion. Are these explanations of yours based on hypothesis? How does one even come to discover such a happening that appears to be natural order of the world?

[If Gordon was trying to hook her with knowledge, she's certainly taken the bait.]

Exactly. You start with a hypothesis, and test it in experiment. See if you can replicate the effect, keeping parameters under control so any changes you see are ONLY the effect you're looking for. If it works, you have yourself a solid theory... even a law if it tests out time and time again.

Oh, incidentally, you know who first tested that one?

A Lord by the name of Rayleigh.

[Colour her even more surprised. This man is a fountain of knowledge. Like a modern-aged Saleh, who she knows very well is a worldly man in his own right.]

Lords and ladies are capable of such feats? It sounds like such a grand undertaking, though no more than striking down the enemy of a war.

[She quiets as she taps at the bottom of her chin.]

I can understand the process, but if I were to say I truly understood, I suppose that'd be a falsehood. I do, however, find myself immensely intrigued by you. I should think I'd very much like to be a part of your class, Professor Scientist.

[Just don't ask him about history. We all have our weak points. He sprouts a grin at "Professor Scientist." Sounds like the name of a kid's TV show.]

Dr. Freeman actually. Or Gordon. I'll answer to either in class.

I'd like to have you there. Do you know anything about... mathematics? Arithmetic? It won't exclude you if you don't, I have a few students that are in the process of learning it, but it's the most powerful tool we have in science.

Dr... Freeman, then.

[She can't seem to determine what's more respectful and that's likely obvious. She's always referred to her tutors with the highest esteem. Such modern speak is difficult for her.]

I know very little of numbers. I am capable of reading and writing, but only numbers vaguely. It was not in my tutelage to learn of work otherwise reserved for our treasury or the guards who tended to it. In that respect, I may be a bit behind the academics of my peers.

Don't worry; I try to include some basic numbers tutelage in the alpha tier of my class.

[Although he REALLY wishes they had a proper math instructor.]

Have you signed up for any other classes?

Alpha tier... [It sounds like such a fancy way to say she's at the bottom of 'science' in terms of academic knowledge.

Then she shakes her head at him.]

Not... really. I was a bit distracted by everything here. I seem to be easily caught up in the foreign things here. I suppose I hadn't found the time to really understand what classes I could contribute to.

[Well... yes, unfortunately. The two-tier system was something of his own design so he could teach everything from middle school- to university-level physics in a single class.]

My advice is to start with what interests you. We all start somewhere, and the classes are there for you to learn.

I did not have the intention to stay here for a great deal of time.

[It's said surprisingly directly.]

I had actually thought I would have returned to my homeland. I didn't anticipate that I'd be here as long as I have been. I suppose that is another reason as to why I've not found my way into classrooms...

[But now her investigation with Connor and Innes... And Blaze's search for Emeralds... Eirika's committed herself to things that shouldn't involve her at all. As usual.]

...I know the feeling.

[Eventually he'll go back and finish what he started...]

What I mean is, you're not alone. There are a number of students here that came here involuntarily with no obvious way back.

So it's a common occurrence...

[At least that's how he makes it sound.]

I feel a little better knowing that I am not the only one. I was in a haste to return home before, but now... I think I could be of some use while I'm here.
