First post of the year on the first day

Gooood morning lovely people of Smash, lovely morning we have after new years ain't it?

[Surprisingly, he was out of sight for the whole bar fiasco.]

I mean, 's a lovely morning, winter or no and seems like we're off a good start in the year right. Why, I feel like we might have a good year ahead, especially with such a good start.

Well, y'know, it's a good day and all.

[He's awfully cheery, more than usual if one paid more careful attention.

Then again, he started humming a tune familiar to many. That is, before he got too excited and it turned into a different tune altogether.]

[He's not going to wish you a happy birthday.

Instead Brown's going to get tickets to the musical and a deed to a local radio station.

Yeah congrats, FM 108.45 is yours.]

[Yeah, see here? A small present despite no well wishes would be enough for him to leave the person.

But a radio station? ~~Nevermind the musical, he had a feeling in his stomach that it would just leave him disappointed.~~]

EXPLANATION. NOW.

[So yeah, he barged into his room without any sorts of warning such as knocking.]

[Good thing Nanjo was doing some light reading (by which I mean reading university level books that were around 500 pages long on communication and commercial values in the past 5 years. When he looks up, there's the usual scoff of annoyance.]

It was better than buying the local TV.

[He know exactly why you are here and to be honest, he's not sure you're ready for ...no the world is ready for you on the small screen. So just hearing your voice will suffice for now.]

In all seriousness, you do realize you just handed a hardly legal kid a radio station for his 17th birthday right? As much as I dreamed it Nanjo, I can't turn into an adult hero from getting struck by a magic lightning bolt summoned by the word.

[And no one, let alone Nanjo, would get that reference unless they were a big dork, Brown.]

[Yeah no, Nanjo would never get that in a million years. But he does smile despite not getting it.]

Then the answer is simple, Uesugi.

Perhaps it's time for you to fall out of the nest, and fly on your own.

Nest metaphors that involves flying doesn't work on chickens.

[He sighed.] Does this have to do with your Marty McFly info about the future or of the sort?

[Siiigh. Self defeating and you'emetaphors are horrible. He barely knows about Marty McFly, just in passing during parties when it was a horrible popular movie.]

The future starts today, not tomorrow. What you do with it is not my concern; turn it into something else if you'd like.

Nanjo, repeat after me, 'I just gave the now-seventeen year old Uesugi a radio station as a gift'. I'm a delicate creature, I'm still trying to process this all in.

[He's mostly joking this time, but it still nags him regardless, not that he would admit much of it.]

It's a small radio station, I still fail to see the problem.

[But now he huffs.]

You do realize that in our culture it is very impolite to argue or turn down a gift? [He's going to do it. He's gonna bring out Japan as an arguing point, and you can't run away from that.]

Gh-! Unfair man, you bring out the big guns.

[He DOES have a point though, it would be extremely rude to turn down a gift.]

But- C'mon it's just that- Ugh, fine. Thanks.

[He had his eyes downcast, he felt his cheeks slightly changed color.

Brown's voice was far more softer when he said;]

Really though, thanks, Nan- Kei. That's what I call you right in the future, right?

[Good thing he doesn't even notice, head already back in his book, but there's a small grin.]

Yeah.

[Now he sounds like their leader. How much maturity had been crammed into him the last three years? For a few more minutes he thinks about the possibility of the future, and realizes that whatever place they are stuck in here now doesn't seem to affect that in any way. He's seen some appear and disappear and reapper with new memories that hadn't affected the old ones. So maybe he can...]

Before I arrived here, we were all talking inside a tavern. Well, without Ayase and Mark due to previous engagements on Ayase' part, and Mark still in New York...but I did take pictures on my phone.

[It's a subtle question that isn't even presented as one. Blink and you might miss it. Also good lord Kei wash rich to have a photo phone back in that year.]

It was a prototype developed by Nanjo Corp. [Oh that explains it.]

[From the sound of it, both Ayase and Mark seems to be doing good despite not meeting Nanjo and the others... That's good. Yeah, that's definitely good, because he wouldn't want to expect less.

But this was the big moment, since arriving, Nanjo had been nothing but secretive of the (possible) future at hand. He couldn't mask his nervousness, he was rather afraid of looking, afraid to see what his friend had been hiding all this time.]

Y... You sure I can take a look?

[He gives him the phone without hesitation.]

It's up to you. Think of it as a birthday present. A rare glimpse into the future.

[With hesitation, he pressed a button and he gasped when he saw the picture. It was definitely his friends, just a few years older. Ol' piercey looked pretty good from the looks of it, not like everyone else was slouching. He could see that Yukino really was gorgeous once she shed out the delinquent look, Maki's look just shows even more how she had mature- he wondered how her condition was doing, but he was hoping she was as healthy as ever like in that picture.

He clicked next after each few minutes, with each new photo, he gets a glimpse how things both changed and not at the same time. Brown briefly snorted when he realize they weren't hanging out with Kandori, rather a befuddled Reiji with a simpler haircut. As he looked further, he looked rather melancholic-- even if Nanjo reassure him of future events, it wouldn't really stop being scary on what's about to come if he was thrown back to the appropriate timeline.

He stopped changing pictures completely. This couldn't be...

This stranger on the picture, it was surreal seeing it. It was definitely him, older, it seemed like his cocky expression seemed more... natural. He was wearing an outfit that he could only dreamed of buying now, it looked like it was the latest thing at the time, and possible rather expensive at the time. Did he finally get some peace in the future? The Brown in the picture seemed so himself, he definitely could tell it wasn't forced one bit.]

This moron right here... couldn't be any other idiot than yours truly, ain't it?

No, that's Naoya.

[Please feel the sarcasm. It is the best joke he could do. One could really consider it a joke but...it's not like Nanjo could actually see what Brown was looking at.]

If it's the outfit with more front pockets than is humanly needed, then yes. [What did he even put in those...]

[Brown stood in silence before.]

Pfffhht--

[He erupted into a fit of laughter. It wasn't from Nanjo's sarcasm sadly, it was from pure relief. He couldn't quite understand why he feels the reason to laugh, maybe out of the fact that things will always be the same in the core, he just laughed really loud.

Brown was clutching on his stomach and couldn't stand up straight, even when the laughter had stopped and he was gasping for air.]

Holy shit that's just- god. That's just. Incredible, actually.

Call me dumb or whatever, but this was still better than nothing and told me more than I needed. Thanks, again.

[Dont uh...ever change. He guesses? Well he seemed amused.]

It's... good. It's all real good.

[Brown carefully pulled himself off and dusted his pants. He sighed in relief as he looked Nanjo in the eye, sincerely for the first time since meeting him in Smash Academy.]

Really, thanks. Means a lot than I could explain.
