Video Post

[Oh look it's a video post from your favorite political science instructor. He looks content, sitting at his desk. His jacket is off, slung over the back of his chair, so he's just wearing his white shirt with a loosened pink tie.]

Hi there. [He waves.] I hope you're enjoying your summer off.

[It's in the summertime where he gets bored, wishes he had cases to solve. Wishes he was home. Because he misses everyone - Edgeworth, Maya, Pearl... But he puts on a good face for the camera.]

It's hard to believe I've been here for two school years already, you know. Today I'm another year older, and... time has seemed to have flown by.

[He looks slightly wistful, turning his head to an angle and looking off seemingly into the distance.]

I miss my home and my last job, but... [He turns back toward the camera.] My experience here is something I wouldn't trade for anything.

[WHY DID SHE NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS SOONER?

When she speaks, it's probably louder than it needs to be.]

It's your birthday??

Oh... Yeah... I guess it is, ahaha... [A sheepish look as he gives a nervous laugh.]

It kind of slipped my mind, I guess.

How does something like that just slip your mind?
Let's go do something right now.

Oh, I don't know... I guess I was never one for too much celebrating, I guess?

[Well, he does celebrate now and then, at least more than certain colleagues whose last names begin with E.]

But if you want to go do something, sure, we can! What did you have in mind?

Not you either, huh?

[She leans back in her chair and childishly blows her front locks of hair up, occasionally revealing her other eye.]

Hum. I've never celebrated mine and I don't really know what humans do for their birthdays except eat a lot of food, sometimes drinking and dancing. But prom wasn't that long ago.

We should do something you'd like to do.

[He smiles and nods at her. It's something he can relate to too. While he's had birthday celebrations before, it's something he can neglect as he gets older and more wrapped up in his career.]

You know... I'm just happy when I'm with friends. ...And family...

[He adds the last part after a beat, realizing that Voile is akin to family for him.]

So... I'm up for anything, really.

[Her look to him is appreciative. He didn't have to say that, but she likes it nevertheless.

Her head tips and she eyes the ceiling for a few moments.]

Up for anything, huh?

[Quiet for a little longer, she doesn't look to him as she continues.]

Ever wanted to go visit one of the regions?

One of the regions?

[He makes no connection whatsoever that Voile may be referring to the World of Pokemon.]

You mean... of Final Destination City?

[She shakes her head.]

No, no. I meant like Hoenn. Or Johto. Something like that. Someplace new to you, and maybe to me, too.

Oh! [He laughs nervously.] One of those regions!

The, er, regions with Pokemon, right?

[He stops and thinks.]

You know, I would like to go sometime. Maybe I could learn how to be a better trainer if I'm in the actual world...

That's right. I've heard of about five, I think. Kanto, which is where the trainer Red is from - and Marie and Sonny. Gold is from Johto. I'm from Hoenn. Professor Cyrus is from Sinnoh. And if you remember N, he's from Unova.

Lots of places to choose from and they're all different, I've heard. But I've only been to Johto and Hoenn. I'd like to see the others some day, especially their contest halls.

[He listens and nods his head as Voile talks. He's only familiar with some of those names, but god that is a lot of land names. He recognizes some from the books.]

Well... Maybe sometime this summer you and I should take a trip to one of those places. We could check out those contest halls!

[She leans forward with pleasant surprise.]

Wow! Really?? Do you promise, Phoenix??

Uh... yeah! Of course!

[He smiles sheepishly, seeing how happy Voile is.]

I really do want to see these places too.

[If she were younger, she'd probably squeak.]

Oh! I'm so glad!

[Afterward, she nods.]

Then, yes! Please let's go visit one of the regions this summer! I would really, really like that.

Great! Well then I'll leave it up to you to decide where we go!

You got it! I'll pick us something great!

[The video turns on to show a broadly grinning humanized vaporeon holding up a wonderfully colored "Happy Birthday" on a drawing pad. Though she may not know him, she still felt that birthdays must be congratulated and wishes should be shared. Then, after a moment, she'd flip the page (as it was a spiral bound drawing pad) to reveal "I wish you all the happiness in the world."]

[Phoenix doesn't know the girl, but he can't help but grin at the image. It's so cute and thoughtful!]

Hey, thank you so much!

By the way, I don't think I've seen you around. What's your name?

[Leaving the video on, Chiyo tilted her head and smiled. Then she began typing.]

You're welcome! My name is Chiyo, and yours?

[It's a little odd that she leaves the video on while typing. Phoenix waits for her to say something, but all of her words come through in text. Okay. Well, she isn't the only seemingly mute one in this school. There's Caim and then that young woman with the dark ponytail.

He looks a bit perplexed as he watches her, at least before replying. He almost types in response, before realizing he still has the video on.]

Oh--! Ah, I'm Phoenix Wright, the political science instructor here. It's nice to meet you Chiyo.

It's nice to meet you, too, Teacher Phoenix! Are you enjoying your day so far?

[He gives a smile again before he instinctively goes to the keyboard to reply-- then he realizes once again that this is video. Right.]

Sure, it's been a good day.

Ah-- why do you type when you have the video on? Surely you can just talk?

[Chiyo looks at him a bit curiously before adopting a bit of an embarrassed look and sheepish grin.]

Ah, I'm sorry. I somehow lost my voice, so I'm not able to speak. Does it bother you? I'm sorry if it does.

[He quickly holds up his hands and waves them to assure her it doesn't bother him.]

No, no! I'm not bothered, really! I'm just curious is all. I don't think you're the only one here who can't speak.

That's great then. I wouldn't know what I'd do if it had bothered you. [She smiles at him gently and then adopts a look of curiosity.]

There is Teacher Caim here who is also mute. He teaches fencing. Is there someone else you know of that can't speak?

Yeah, Caim is who I was thinking of!

[He snaps his finger in recognition of the name, though he doesn't give any indication as to how much he dislikes that man.]

Umm... There's a young woman here too I think who doesn't speak. I don't know her name, though. You might have to ask Caim or someone.

[Phoenix assumes that all the mute people hang out together okay.]

Really? I'll have to ask him, then! Thanks for telling me.

So, are you going to do anything special for your birthday? You should! It's such a lovely day!

Ah... I don't know. I might go out for a drink or something?

[He shrugs, clearly having not thought about it at all.]

Hmmm, that sounds nice. ['Cause she totally isn't thinking that might be referring to alcohol.] What kind of drink are you planning on having? Actually, what kind of drinks do you like?

Oh uh... [He shifts nervously. He doesn't want to discuss alcohol with a student. He figured "going out for a drink" was a safe enough implication.]

I like... grape juice.

Oh! Grape juice! I, myself, like it as well. Though I generally like any kind of sweet juice. [There's a pause on her end and she looks as if she's just realized something she shouldn't have overlooked. As fast as she can, she types some more.]

Well, I won't hold you back then, if you're planning to head out soon. I just really wanted to wish you a happy birthday! Hope you enjoy your special day and grape juice, if you choose to drink it.

Ha... yeah, grape juice is good. [He seems relieved, at least. Chiyo doesn't seem to realize that he's talking about an alcoholic(?) beverage.]

Well uh, thanks then! I appreciate it! [He smiles earnestly at her.]

I hope to see you around then!

[Oh...birthday. He has had seen people celebrate it before. He didn't do too much on his. Actually he didn't care to do anything. But whenever someone he knew had a birthday at the Homestead, there was a small gift given to them. It was charming to see. Eventually, people caught onto his birthday...and he received things like fresh produce, fresh meat or eggs, and maybe a meat pie. He appreciated it all, even if he felt they didn't have to. And then he started doing the same for them.]

I see...so this is the day you were born.

[...]

Where I come from, the people from my land would give small gifts. It would be late, and I am still learning the customs here...but perhaps I could give you a small token of a gift.

[Uh. Anyway.]

You say you have been here two years? Against your will?

Huh? Oh no, no! You don't have to give me anything! [He holds up his hands and shakes them, attempting to discourage Connor from buying a gift.]

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply that anyone should buy me gifts. I'm fine without them.

[He clears his throat and straightens up.]

Ah, no... Not against my will. I actually took a job here from an ad I found.

[He wouldn't know what to get anyway. Phoenix probably won't appreciate any pelts. Modern people. Yeesh.]

It would have been have handmade. I know little of what would make "good gifts" in shops here anymore.

[Eh?]

Handmade? [He's intrigued now.] Ah... I'm just kind of curious, what kinds of things do you handmake?

[He leans back and laughs.]

Yeah! I actually took this job willingly! Sometimes I don't know why I did that myself.

It is not much, but I know the bare knowledge of making some jewelry and charms that my people had made.

Another would do a far better job. Though I have been making more of them since I arrived here.

[Whhh.]

Oh, that's neat! I'd like to see some of your handmade crafts sometime, then.

[But back to the subject on hand...]

Yeah. Why is it a surprise? I figured most of the teachers here had taken ads.

Though... I have heard of people being unable to escape from the city.

I came here against my own will. There was no talk of this place where I was from.

[So...his opinion of this place is now...?]

Really? [He frowns a little.] I'm sorry to hear that. To be honest, I hadn't heard of this place either until I came upon that ad...

[He thinks back to that ad. It's hard to remember the specifics. He was in a bad space that time so he can't really remember... but maybe if he had been in a better state of mine he wouldn't have taken the job.]

You need not be sorry for anything, it was not your doing.

[Don't really want to get into this now.]

If I were to be honest, I do not dislike being here.

Well... I mean... That's good to hear, I guess.

[Awkward situation, yes. He is kind of curious to know what happened but he won't push the issue. Still, he scratches the side of his face in sort of an "awkward turtle" kind of motion.]

I'll tell you - I should have walked away after witnessing some things here, but... it's the people I've met that have kept me here.

[~~You say awkward turtle, I see an icon of him doing sexually.~~ Connor might...agree to that to some extent. But however, he had another question.]

Witnessing? Witnessing what?

Oh... Well... There were some really weird things...

[He clears his throat and speaks softly.] A lot of things Eggman has caused, strangely enough...
