Good afternoon, Smash Academy. I hope you are all having a nice weekend.

How do I preface this... Well, as you may have heard from my dear friend and colleague, I had been rushed to the hospital about a month ago. I've been very sick, you see... Yes, I won't deny it was an experience I won't ever want to relive. I should be back up and running soon, though! I wish to put it all behind me and keep marching forward. If I trip, I'll find a way to get back up somehow. I've been doing it for as long as I can remember, so this should be no different.

That being said, I will be back to teaching this week. I've missed my students very much. I'm still figuring out how to integrate myself back to handling working full-time in the infirmary, so you may not see me there often, but I will be in when I can. I'm not quite at my best yet, you see... But it should be no trouble. There are plenty of hands to help should you need them.

Oh! And not to worry! It's not contagious or anything. Just putting that out there!

I feel an incredible need to send a more personal apology your way. You must have worried your thoughts dry wondering whether I was okay or not. I'm so sorry for any anguish I may have caused... If I can summon any strength, any strength at all, I will return to my station as swiftly as is permissible for me. I hope you weren't troubled too much by my absence. I'll find a way to make it up to you somehow.

How unfortunate. My life story itself must create a lot of concern, then. I always seem to get sick, you see... At least the irony of the situation is something we can get a laugh out of!

No, the choice had nothing to do with my desire to overcome my fate. It was my uncle's ingenious idea to introduce me to the art of healing magic. He thought I would be well-suited to the task, and he knew a friend who was skilled with a staff and would be willing to teach me, and what do you know? It worked out splendidly!

As for the source... You're right. I should set my personal feelings aside. Lately, there have been these drugs in the form of candy being distributed through the school, and all throughout the city as well. I would advise you take caution, because the effects just aren't worth it, no matter what great benefits the peddler may boast to you. They made me horribly ill... Yes. I was drugged. It was a mistake, you see...

Oh, I have encountered the subject of magic in some of my readings. Perhaps you can provide some context. Only those with select natural talent can wield it, is that correct?

I will take care to, ah, discreetly warn my clan of these drugged sweets. I do not believe we have come by them, but nor do I believe that they know of the danger. It is a dangerous thing, for a substance to take control of you. Thank you for this knowledge, though it was born from your pain.

Does it have a scent, that you're aware of?

Anyone can wield it, but results vary widely from person to person. You're right about some people possessing more of a magical penchant than others. For some, they can barely get a fizzle out of their efforts. Others may find that with the aid of the spirits that help them, they can realize amazing powers. There's always the in-betweens, too... I'm blessed to be well-liked by the spirits, for they helped me find a good purpose in my life.

Please do! Warn as many out there as you can. As for the scent... They do carry a faint one that can be detected up close. They smell fruity and flavorful, just as you would expect of candy. Is there a reason you ask?

I see. So magic can also be bequeathed or enhanced by the power of spirits. Are they attracted by people of magical talent? Is it... dangerous?

Well, I may be able to detect traces of the drug through odour, if I knew exactly what I was searching for. My kind possesses a rather discriminating sense of smell.

They are attracted to those sorts of people, and not all of them are nice. Some spirits are a little more disturbed than others... Typically, those kinds of spirits are more attracted to those with a propensity for dark magic. I have no experience with them, but I hear they can be very dangerous. Many dark magic users also turn out to be spirit charmers who physically invite the spirits into their body, becoming closer to them and sharing their essence directly, making them highly adept at magic. Unfortunately... it comes at a terrible price. The spirit will, over time, consume the soul of the spirit charmer until there is nothing left. It's very sad... But you don't need to bond to the spirit like that in order to use dark magic! Nonetheless, it is said the user must exert plenty of self-control if they wish to ensure that the darkness does not engulf them. I've heard scary stories...

Oh! So you must be like a dog! Is that right? That sounds like such a useful ability. I wish I had that. I wonder... Would it be too much of me to ask if I could use your ability if I ever needed it? I've been having a lot of troubles with drugs lately, and I never know what could turn up next.

I see... it must not be uncommon for there to be much suspicion towards dark mages - or all mages, perhaps - knowing that there is such potential for the abuse of power and the, ah, corrosion of the self. Though, if a bond to the spirits is not a necessary prerequisite for a dark mage, what differentiates one from other forms of magic?
