[ This was intended to be private to those from Sonic's world save for Eggman, get out, but the work-in-progress on technological matters has made this public. Sonic hasn't a clue. ]

[ Woah! Someone knows what it is! Sonic is visibly impressed, among just absolutely excited he doesn't have to go about explaining everything all over again. ]

Yeah! Surprised you seen 'em before, Pit! No one else seems to recognize 'em!

[Then his pride sort of falls down and gets replaced by a look of utter sadness. He deflates.]

[He looks to the side a little, and it was possible for him to sink in his chair even more.]

[ Okay... Well, everything has to die sometime. Chao did it, too, but he knew they came back.

Well, he couldn't jump to conclusions, but he was pretty much already doing so already. ]

I went on a mission that took a little longer than expected. Duty calls! And normally I can clean up pretty fast and it takes me less than an hour adding up flight time, land battle time and finishing it off with the boss fight finale, but this time I was out of commission for, uhh...

[He does a quick mental count.] Let's say... three years, give or take.

[ Sonic knew all about dropping everything to save the day, but...

He looks a little stunned and very nearly without words.

He looks less than pleased, but what's done is done. He can tell Pit isn't a bad guy and that he'd never do something like that on purpose, so... ]

[ Hm... But you know, Sonic wasn't in the business of scolding. He offers Pit a little smile into the camera. ]

Be careful next time.

[The reassurance isn't enough to lift Pit out of his mire of regretful feelings.] I don't think there'll be a next time, Sonic. I should have taken better care of Miracle, or made sure he was in the right hands.

[Not that it was in his control- Skyworld had utterly transformed over those three years thanks to the Chaos Kin.]

I don't think I should shoulder the responsibility of having a Chao. Especially if I'm just going to end up killing it again. I don't think I could take it.

[ Sonic tapped his chin thoughtfully. Well, Pit was thinking responsibly, he had to give him that. ]

You make it sound like that's the inevitable, Pit. It's not like you wanna do any harm to the Chao, right?

[He shakes his head gently from side to side, still unable to look directly at Sonic.]

It's more than that. I don't want to get another Chao just because I screwed up last time. It can't be for my sake. All those good times we made into memories together? The next Chao I bring under my wing won't remember them. It'll be a hard reset.

I don't think I'm ready to start over. You know?

[ So that was it...

Sonic was walking the line of what to say, but he brought on that hedgehog smile. ]

I think it's great you want to be responsible about things, and ya should! But you're thinkin' too hard!

You don't stop makin' friends just because you can't see one anymore, right? [ He sighs through his nose. ] It's sad. Trust me, I get it, but they're always part of you and life goes on. I bet there's a Chao out there that doesn't even know they're missing out on the best friend they ever had right now.

[Sonic's words manage to worm their way into his heart and inspire him to follow that mindset. It's obvious by the way Pit's eyes intensify.]

It makes sense when you put it that way. If I ever meet another Chao or two, there shouldn't be anything stopping me from playing with them a little. And when that guy hatches, I'll be sure to say hi.
